To Court the King is a dice-based board game designed by Tom Lehmann. It was published in German by Amigo Spiele and in English by Rio Grande Games in 2006. The basic mechanics of rolling and re-rolling dice have drawn comparisons to the game of Yahtzee.

As a royal petitioner attending court, the players must parlay their powers of persuasion to gain the support of court officials and sway the King to their cause. The players’ persuasive powers, in a constantly shifting court, are represented by dice. Each starts with three dice. Each turn, a player rolls the dice, sets aside at least one die, and re-rolls the rest until he has set all his dice aside. When you throw the dice and you have the right pattern, you can get a character card. Each character has a cost and brings an ability to the player that get them. like the Farmer the cost a pair, the laborer that cost a total of 15 pip or more, the Fool or the Gard, to name a few. Each character gives the player an extra ability. Those characters cost if they form an appropriate pattern, a player may obtain a character card, giving him another die or a special power. The first player to roll seven of a kind gains the King’s support and, possibly, victory! The support of the King (and Queen) is often the difference in the final roll-off, which determines the winner!
For instance, the Farmer character cost a pair, the Laborer cost a total of 15 pips or more, but you can get the Fool with any dice throw (free). The Gard, is a bit more difficult to get as you need a triplet.
Each character gives the player an extra ability or special power. For instance, you can get to play an extra dice, or move the result of one or two of the dice that you just rolled (also called the active dice).
The first player to roll seven of a kind gains the King’s support and, possibly, victory! The support of the King (and Queen) is often the difference in the final roll-off, which determines the winner!
During this last roll-off, each player will try to roll as high a dice result as he can, thus having the still opportunity to beat the player that got the King and Queen card. A player that rolls 8 times one will beat a player that rolls seven times six.
So overall, a really fun game to play, that will have a good bit of strategy as well as you need to do the right choice, between getting the cards that will allow you to manipulate the dice result and the ones that will bring you extra dice.
